My Top Post Workout Mistakes

I went to the gym today and managed to finally get a run in! Yesterday I got the wonderful call from my podiatrist to say that my customized orthotics had arrived!! It really made my day. Yeah I know I just aged myself :(

Anyways while at the gym I managed to run 3 miles on the treadmill. I was debating about running outside vs the gym but I decided the treadmill would be a safe transition. Plus, I also wanted to do a little leg workout. Well two blisters later...yeah I should've listened to the Doc and actually break the orthotics in. I figured since they felt fine while walking on them, running should feel amazing right? Well it made sense in my head.

After the gym though I started thinking of the mistakes we are all guilty of doing at one point or another after our workouts. Here are the top mistakes I've made:

  • AVOIDING COOL DOWN: Our bodies need to cool down after a heavy workout in order to prevent injury. I used to be guilty of this while running on the treadmill. I would just immediately stop and not let my heart rate or blood pressure transition back to normal. Now I have a cool down routine for whatever exercise I am doing.

  • FORGETTING TO STRETCH: Runners are either great at stretching or absolutely horrible. I tend to believe I am somewhere in the middle. But when I first started running, I would only stretch when I would get around to it. Now I understand the importance of preventing injury by stretching. It only took me a few years.

  • NOT EATING AFTER A WORKOUT: Eating a protein rich snack is the best thing you can do for your body after an intense workout. It helps restore your tired muscles and prevents soreness. I typically try to eat something no more than 30 minutes after a workout.

  • STAYING IN SWEATY CLOTHES AFTER A WORKOUT: We all get tired after going to the gym or going out for a run but it is pretty important to get out of those clothes as soon as you can. Not only can it cause yeast infections and skin acne, but it can also weaken your immune system. Since fall is here and the weather is getting cooler, staying in wet clothes will make you chilly and increase your chances of getting sick. 

  • REWARDING MYSELF WITH HIGH CALORIE TREATS: I couldn't understand why I wasn't loosing weight when I first started working out. I was going to the gym and working out but I was guilty or "rewarding" myself for my hard work with high calorie foods.  I would go to Jamba Juice for a "healthy" smoothie that just happened to have way more calories than I had burned at the gym. Or I would go get some frozen yogurt and top it with a ridiculous amount of toppings...once again defeating the purpose. Well I quickly learned this lesson.

  1. Not eating after a workout is a deal breaker and it can make you go from feeling like a rock star to wanting to take a nap. Like my husband says you must feed the machine!

  3. If I don't stretch, bad things happen! I would say not stretching is my biggest mistake. I have recently recommitted to stretching and things have been working out well. Cross your fingers!
