Running, Family Time, and Hikes: My Weekend Recap

Happy Monday! This weekend was all about spending time with my family and exploring my old stomping grounds. I can't believe it was has been a week since I moved to San Diego. Hopefully this weekend my hubby gets to move down too. Fingers crossed! It all depends on my work schedule and I am still not sure what that is going to be like. I am used to knowing my schedule three months in advanced and lately it has been week to week.

Just a quick recap on my shenanigans this weekend:

Saturday I decided to get a quick early run in Mission Bay. It was recommended to me by a friend since it is scenic and flat. It is actually a great place to workout at since it is right off the freeway. You can't miss it. So if you find yourself visiting and looking for a quick and easy run I highly recommend.

Afterwards I got to see some family and friends for my cousin's baby shower. I was so happy I was able to go this. Being far away from family, I've missed a lot of get togethers. Hopefully that will all change now that I am here. I am really looking forward to little Leonardo! Can't wait to meet him. The theme was lions. My aunt did a great job hosting and the food was amazing.
I have no sisters, so growing up I was really close to my cousins. We shared a lot growing up and unfortunately some of us aren't as close as we used to be.  This is why moving to San Diego was the right choice. In the end family is everything. I know I can always count on them even though I was far away.

On Sunday my mother and I climbed Cowles Mountain in San Diego. We wanted to get there before it got too hot and even though we got there at 8am the hike was still hot.  Since I have been battling a cold all week my lungs weren't quite cooperating with me. My legs kept telling me to go but it really felt like I was gasping for air with every step I took. I made it to the top though!

The views made the hike completely worth it! I am hoping to do this hike at least once a week or hike in other locations of San Diego once a week. It is a different kind of workout and it will help with my cross training for my half marathon coming up.

Later on my mom, dad and I went to Souplantation for salads and soups of course. My parents love coming to this place. I don't usually go here but since I am here and they offered to pay then who am I to say no.

Nothing too exciting to report on my end. Other than starting my half marathon training and family time, my weekend was pretty casual. Today I start my actual work orientation. Last week was the hospital orientation. This week the fun begins! Wish me luck since I have no idea what I am doing working with adults. I am used to my babies. All I can say is that I am up for the challenge and hoping to learn more and become a well rounded respiratory therapist. Have a good day everyone!

Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Training Recap

This past week not only was it my first week back in San Diego but it was also the beginning of my training for my next race. I'll be running the Rock 'n' Roll San Diego half marathon on May 31st. I've ran this race multiple times before. Initially this race was only a full marathon course and in fact has been the only marathon course I have ran. Over the years they have added different race lengths along with the full marathon. I believe this year they are offering a 5k, a two person half marathon relay, a half marathon, and a full marathon.

Even though this week was super slow for me in regards to training, it was a good way to see where I stood. And the reality is that I am really out of shape!

MONDAY: Ran with my doggies just around the neighborhood. No Garmin so no distance but can't imagine it was more than 2 miles.

TUESDAY: Walked the dogs, easy day

WEDNESDAY: No workout

THURSDAY: Yoga! I am trying to do this once a week since I am really bad with stretching. I've been doing them online in the convenience of my own place.

FRIDAY: Same run with my dogs as Monday.

SATURDAY: Ran a little over 3 miles at Mission Bay and did some calisthenics. The views were pace was horrible though. I used Runkeeper since I didn't charge my Garmin and it was sad to see how slow I've gotten.

TODAY (SUNDAY): Did some cross training and went for a hike up Cowles Mountain. It was beautiful at the top but my lungs weren't quite cooperating with me. I've been dealing with a cold all week and I sure felt it going up. My legs felt fine but my chest felt like I was sucking on a straw to catch air. I am going to try to climb this mountain once a week to hopefully see improvement with my time.

But like I said the views of SD were well worth the hike!

* Increase mileage
* Continue to incorporate yoga
* Keep cross training

I don't have a gym membership over here yet and I don't think I am going to get one until I buy a house. So my training is going to be a lot different than my other races. The next 10 weeks I won't be able to weight lift to cross train but I am hoping to incorporate different ways of cross training like hiking, yoga, Insanity, calisthenics, etc. I hate the treadmill but it is a great way of getting my sprint workouts, or just getting some miles in after a 12.5 hours work shift. It will be tough getting those weekly miles in without my gym membership.

As for my foot pain...yeah it's still there unfortunately. Even with all this time off I've taken, the pain is still there. The only difference is that I didn't have my feet taped this week. I am going to have to go to a local running store to get Rock or KT tape. Taping my feet makes a huge difference.

Do you have a gym membership?
If not, what exercises do you do from home?
Did you race this weekend?

Friday Five: Spring Into Shape!

Over here in California, spring showed up a few weeks ago. We didn't get much of a winter in comparison to my East Coast friends. They seemed to have gotten the short end of the stick. The weather over here has been pretty amazing and at times a little too hot for this time of the year. But now that "technically" spring is coming, what better way to celebrate the season change than by getting back in shape! Once again I am linking up with with Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC,  Mar from Mar On The Run, and Cynthia from You Signed Up For What? for Friday Five. This week's topic is spring!

1. SIGN UP FOR A RACE: It doesn't have to be a marathon. Even a simple 5K race can be just the motivation to get off the couch and be active. I have a race on May 31st which I am pretty excited to run. Any one else running the SD Rock N Roll Half Marathon?

2. TRY AN EXERCISE CLASS: Are you in a rut with your regular workout routine? Then spicing up your choices is just what you need. Maybe it's time to finally take that Zumba class or try that spin class. I am dying to try a bar class but haven't gotten around to it.

3. FIND A WORKOUT BUDDY: Sometimes all you need is just a little motivation to get you started. That's where a workout buddy comes in! Both you and your buddy will pump each other up and in turn motivate each other. I am still looking for a running buddy here in San Diego. My running partner in Fresno was awesome and will be very hard to replace.

4. SET REALISTIC GOALS: If you hibernated all winter then setting a goal to train for an Ironman in a month isn't really realistic. Start off slow and make weekly goals so your long term goals don't seem so daunting. For example is you are hoping to loose those pesky 5-10 pounds, realize that you won't loose the wait after ONE workout!

5. EAT WELL, DRINK LOTS OF WATER, SLEEP WELL:  The best way to spring back into shape is by mentally and physically preparing your body. You are what you eat, so change your eating habits if all you are doing is eating processed food. I feel the best when I am eating healthy and staying hydrated. Water is an essential nutrient that the body needs and craves. Also getting the adequate amount of sleep keeps me energized and ready for workouts. I've realized my body runs best if I get more than 7 hours of sleep. I know sometimes that's impossible to achieve with so much going on, but I still try.

Living the SD Life!

Well let's see...its been five days since I moved to San Diego and in those five days I've managed to get a lot done. There were things that I still had to do for my Fresno home and things I needed to get done in my current living situation. I moved back home with my parents while my husband and I figure out our housing situation. Last time I said we had a potential offer on our Fresno home...well it went through and we are officially in escrow!! We have less than 30 days now. Crazy to think how fast our house went on the market. The best part about it is that my hubby and I wont be far away from each other for much longer. Yay!

I started orientation on Tuesday for my new job. There was actually a pretty big group of us there, somewhere between 40-50 people. Some people had been trying for years to get into the hospital! I felt very lucky to have been hired after my first time applying. So during orientation it was the basic hospital orientation: welcome, meet everyone, hear different departments talk, parking, badges, unions, etc. Can I just take a moment to point out that this is the first time I have taken a good badge picture! I mean every other badge I have taken I seem to get this crazy lazy eye or I look all mean. I was thoroughly happy with the outcome.

Hospital Orientation will continue for the remainder of the week but the real fun starts next week. That's when the my department orientation takes place. I have mentioned before I have always worked with children and babies right? Well this time I am full on working with adults. Bigger airways, bigger phlegm...

The remainder of this week is learning the computer charting. Today we actually had a short day and since the class was by La Jolla, I decided I needed a quick trip to the beach. It was awesome to soak my feet in the warm sand.

When I was there I couldn't help but think of how blessed I am to be living in my hometown again with all my family and get to visit the beach as often as I want. I stayed around for an hour and then headed home to work on some work computer modules.

Also, this week is the beginning of my training for my next race at the end of May. I will be running the San Diego Rock and Roll Half Marathon on May 31st. I've ran this race multiple times but it is one of my favorites because I run it with friends. This year my husband is even running it with me which I am super excited about. The best part is that we get VIP access to this race! I am not expecting a PR since I am still going through some pain issues with my plantar fasciitis, but I would like a decent time.

So far this week my training has been going super slooooow. I foresee it picking up by the end of the week though. This will be interesting since I can't over do it because of my feet. I will definitely need to listen to my body a bit more, but I am excited to get back into shape! Oh and I am also excited because I get to train in new running routes. I'll be posting about my training and workouts on Sundays so watch out for those posts. One thing I am going to definitely do for this training session is to incorporate yoga once a week to make sure I stay limber. I don't want any more injuries!

When is your next race?
How do you train if injured?
Any readers/blogger in San Diego?
Would love to meet up :)

Weekend Recap: The Final Goodbyes

It's Monday and I am now blogging from San Diego! I made the drive here yesterday and not going to lie I cried for an hour after I left. It was sad leaving my house and my husband.  I miss him already...Fingers crossed the house sell fast so that we don't have to do long distance for long. Actually last night we got a late text from our realtor saying someone placed on offer on our house. She is checking on it today to make sure it is legitimate.  Let me remind you our house barely went on the market last Thursday!

This past weekend was all about goodbyes. On Friday I went to my BFF's house to spend time with her, my goddaughter and her son Oliver. I always have a great time when I am there. I don't have kids but I sure enjoy spending time with her kids. Ellie, my goddaughter is such a trip. I just love her and am bummed I won't get to see her on a weekly basis like I have been before the move.

Then Friday evening my co-workers threw me one last hoorah at a Mexican restaurant. There were over 30 people there which was awesome. I was very fortunate to truly enjoy where I worked. I loved that I made such a difference in a child's life. What made the experience even better was the people, my second family. The following are some of the pictures of the dinner. It may be picture overload but I don't care.

Troy and I (my mentor for acute care)

Liz and I (Amazing voice!!)

Andres, Sylvia, Me, and Dario

Tabby, Evo, and I

Kristin, Evo, and I

Lorraine and I (great Charge Nurse!)

Shauna and I (my Charge RT)

Lori and I (Nepal buddy)

Baby Marisa, Meghan, and I

Christina and I (my lunch buddy)

Jennifer, Kevin, and I (Nepal buddies)

Charlene and I

The girls
Sylvia, Christina, Lani, Bri, Me, Janelle, Ronnie, Evo

Afterwards Andres, Sylvia, Dario, and I went to Red Wave for some more drinks.  Two other co-workers met up with us there so it was great to see them.

Really going to miss her!

Friday night was pretty awesome because I was surrounded by great people.  Friends that I am going to truly miss. They also gave me going away presents...I felt so loved.

Saturday I had to do some light packing and get out of the house for house viewings scheduled, so I decided to get myself a pedicure. I couldn't go to San Diego with my feet all tore up.

Then I went to visit my friend Angela and her kiddos. I brought pies because Saturday was Pi day! I am total geek and love this day. We used to have Pi parties in college to celebrate.

Sunday I had breakfast with my friends Ashley before church. I left Fresno around 2:30pm and got to my parent's house around 7:30pm. I made great time...very minimal traffic. I took it as a great sign that this is the beginning of the next chapter in my life. Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Moving Day!!

Today is the day...moving day!!! Well moving day for me. My husband sticks around until the house sells. I move first since my first day of work happens to be on Tuesday. I really cut things pretty short but I don't like having too much time off. I get either anzy or lazy.

Fingers crossed the house sells soon because I am not very excited about having a long distance marriage. We've had quite a bit of interest on the house but no offers yet. It's only been on the market since Tuesday so that looks promising. I also want to thank you guys for wishing me good luck on this new chapter in my life. It means a lot to me. I swear as I get older change is harder to go through.  You get comfortable and doing a move like this is out of my comfort zone now.

Things I still have to do from San Diego:

* CALL MOVING/STORAGE COMPANY. We are still keeping the house staged until we get an offer so we haven't packed the big stuff. Pretty much everything else is packed in the garage.

* SET UP INTERNET. My parents don't have Internet and since my husband works from home, this is a necessity. My parents barely got a microwave about a year ago!

* CALL SALVATION ARMY. We have so much stuff to donate! I've been purging through everything. We have to downsize  so donating seems like the right thing to do.

* CALL FOR GARBAGE PICKUP. So along with putting stuff away for donating, I've accumulated quite a bit of trash. A lot more trash that can be picked up on the weekly

Hope everyone is having a great weekend! I'm out the door and on my way to San Diego!!

Thinking Out Loud

Happy Thursday! I have been quite busy today but just wanted to check in real quick and update you on what's been going on in my life lately. I am linking up with Amanda from Running with Spoons for this quick Thinking Out Loud rendition.

I said that one of my goals this month was to spend as much time as I could with my Fresno peeps and boy have I! On Monday I had dinner with two friends at a local sushi restaurant. We closed the place down and didn't even realize it. It was so great to catch up with them.

Yesterday I went to San Diego for a quick trip. The trip was less than 24 hours and the best part was that I got to see my babies!! I was so happy to see them and as you can see Guinness didn't want me to leave. Kona was mad at me for leaving her last week. Today though, she followed me everywhere. I think she knew I was going to leave her again. I swear these dogs have the funniest personalities.

Oh! Today my house went on the market...EEEKKK!! I knew it was going to happen today but once I saw it listed it just hit me like a ton of bricks. This is for reals...I am really moving! An overwhelming feeling of sadness came through me. So many memories shared with my hubby here but we are excited to see what the next chapter in our lives has in store for us.

Oh and we already have people scheduled for viewing house! Someone was actually supposed to see it today but they changed their minds. I guess that is normal in the real estate world...kind of annoying if you ask me.

A professional photographer came by yesterday evening and took some really good pictures. Here are just a few of the many wonderful pictures he took.

Okay so when it comes to packing I am happy to report that I have kept to my schedule and have just about everything I needed to pack done. The hardest was probably the kitchen. We are going to continue to stage our house until an offer comes around. Fingers crossed we hear from someone soon.

As for my working out...well on Wednesday I was supposed to go for my last run with my running partner. Key word is "supposed." We arrived at our normal spot to run at our park and it was sprinkling. Usually I would have been super excited to run in the rain but I got lazy and asked her if we could go eat breakfast instead. Haha!

Okay so what is in the agenda for the reminder of the week? Well tomorrow I am having brunch at my BFF's house. I am excited to hang out with her and her kiddos before I leave. Her daughter happens to also be my goddaughter. Then for dinner I am having one last hoorah with my co-workers. We are having dinner at a local Mexican restaurant. This dinner should be a lot of fun! Saturday our friend is coming to fix some electrical issues and then I'll be hanging out with another friend the rest of the afternoon. Sunday I am going to church and then heading out to San Diego for good. Crazy how this is all happening so fast!
