My Unexpected Last Race of 2015

On Saturday morning I received a text from my friend/coworker asking me if I was interested in running a 10K on Sunday. She had originally signed up for it a few weeks ago, but woke up feeling under the weather. She had two bibs up for grabs and she asked for no money in return. All she wanted was for the bibs to not go to waste. So I woke up my husband and asked him if he would be interested in running with me. He hesitantly said yes (bless his heart) and then went back to bed.

I know I had said that I was done running races for 2015 but I just couldn't pass up a free race entry! Plus the race sounded like a lot of fun...I mean who doesn't like free booze (in this case rum) at the end of a run?? Since the race was the following day I was in a crunch to get my race packet. I already had a ton of things to do on Saturday and now I somehow had to squeeze in a trip to Road Runner Sports. Luckily it was on my way to an appointment I had in the afternoon. I wish I had more time because Road Runner was having an amazing sale! They had a ton of shoes and clothes on clearance and it was really good stuff. My wallet (and husband) were very happy I didn't buy anything though. I literally picked up my packet and bolted out of there.
The race started at 10am on Sunday, which in my opinion is way to late to start a race. My husband was happy he was able to sleep in, but I on the other hand was wishing the race was earlier. We got there with plenty of time to park, use the restrooms, stretch, and take some pictures.

The race was located in Paradise Point which is in Mission Bay. I guess they have been doing this race for four years now, always at the same location. It was absolutely beautiful! Pretty much during the entire 6.2 miles, you had water views. You really can't beat that. The weather was partly cloudy in the low 60s. I decided to wear the t-shirt given and some black leggings and let me tell you it was a bad idea. I was burning up during the run. Never again will I wear all black to any race.

We actually had a really great pace for the first three miles. We were averaging less than a 9 minute mile which for me is awesome. I didn't feel tired or as if I was over doing it. Unfortunately my husband didn't feel the same way. He didn't say anything so I just assumed he was fine. He generally outruns me even without any training so when I saw that he needed to stop I knew he was in bad shape. He told me to go ahead but I just couldn't. We started the race together and I really wanted to finish it together. So we walked for a bit and then started running again but this time with a much slower pace. Every time I looked back at my husband he just looked so defeated. I really tried to encourage him but I knew he just wanted the race to end.
We finished in 57 minutes which was still a really good time given our slow pace at the end. We ate a few snacks and rehydrated post race before we went to get our hot buttered rum. There wasn't a line for our drinks so we grabbed one and just sat down for a bit. BTW the drink was delicious! Hard to describe what it actually tastes like but just know it hit the spot.

 Pros of the Race:
  • Beautiful location
  • Lots of snack pre and post race
  • Great running shirt
  • The delicious drink at the end
  • Daycare available
  • Kids race
  • Benefited SurfRider Foundation
Cons of the Race:
  • Time of the race
  • Only two water stations (one more would have been nice)
  • No medal
Overall I had great time at the race. I wish I could say the same for my husband. In his defense though, the day before he worked on our back yard all day. I text my friend right after the race to thank her. This race couldn't have come at a more perfect time. Now I can safely say that I ran my last race for 2015. Bring on 2016!
