January Review + 5 Workout Songs To Add To Your Playlist!

Can't believe January is pretty much done! It just feels like this month flew by. I have been pretty active this month considering I am not currently training for anything. I guess you can say I am just training for life. For some reason I have just been extremely motivated and been having so much energy. Don't know how long these bursts of energy will last, so I guess my workouts/running have benefited from this. I didn't set out this year with any real fitness goals. And so far it has worked out great!

For someone who isn't training for any race, I have managed to log in 62.95 running miles this month. I know for some people it doesn't seem like a lot. But this is a lot for me during the "off" season. Not only have I logged in more miles than I usually do, but I have incorporated weight training, HIIT workouts, more yoga, and new supplements. I'll be reviewing the supplements from BeFit along with their 30 day Fat Burner Workouts next month. One lucky reader will even get the opportunity to win their pre-workout, fat burner, and protein powder. So far guys, I am loving their stuff! Stay tuned for this giveaway. You are definitely going to want to sign up.

One thing that I tried more of this month was trail running. I am very fortunate to live near state parks that offer wonderful and absolutely breathtaking trails. If I keep this up, I am going to have to invest in some good trail running shoes. I am sure my husband isn't happy about that, but oh well! My pace is way slower when I run on trails, but I feel better. I can't explain it but it feels a bit more rewarding when I finish even just three miles.

I'm still getting my ocean view runs though! That definitely hasn't changed. Next month is a short one and the best part is that I am going on a little vacation to Cancun! We leave in 10 days and I literally can't wait. My hubby and I really need this. I have six more work shifts to go and then w are off! We love Cancun because it happens to be where we got married. It holds a special place in our hearts. We are actually going to his best friend's wedding. His best friend had such a great time at ours that he and his fiancee wanted to do theirs in Cancun as well.

On a final note, I wanted to share with you guys some of my favorite songs this month. These songs I used for hills, sprints, easy jogs, and even weight training. Enjoy!

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas For Runners

First of all I want to apologize.  This post is geared for female runners. Some gifts can be purchased for both female and males, but the rest are for the ladies.  Okay so I know we are still in January and many of us are still recovering from holiday spending, but guess what? Valentine's day is not far away. So I guess that means it's time to look for a sweet gift for your significant other. If your significant other happens to be a runner, then check out these awesome gift ideas that won't break the bank (well most of them). Ladies feel free to forward this to your significant other. Hint, hint....
RUNNING SHOES: Now running shoes can be pricey but we only want what's best for our feet. So dig through their gym bag, find their running shoes, and buy the exact same pair. You can often find great deals online for shoes. Here are some websites that offer great prices for shoes: Holabird Sports, Road Runner Sports, even Amazon. You can also always try any local runner store. They may be having some Valentine's day deals (plus it is always great to support local.)
As you can tell, I am needing some new shoes!

MOMENTUM JEWELRY: I have been seeing a lot of their designs all over Instagram and let me tell you they are adorable! This company has a passion for fitness and have over 20 years of jewelry making experience. Their goal is to inspire others to be healthy and motivated throughout the day. Their jewelry is comfortable, washable, and lightweight. Here are some of the items they carry: motivate wraps, footnotes, suede cuffs, headbands, earrings, and necklaces.
RACE MEDAL HANGERS: For this one you can get creative and do one yourself or you can buy one online. The options are seriously endless with this gift idea. You can buy a medal hanger for just medals, one with race bibs and medals, or you can personalize them any way you want. Here are some websites you can find race hangers: Sports Hooks, Running on the Wall, Chalktalk Sports, Gone for a Run, Etsy, and Amazon.
TRAINING JOURNAL: This is such a great idea for the runner that has some goals to crush this year! I am in love with the Believe Training Journal (Classic Red). I also discovered this journal through Instagram and have heard nothing but great things.
A FITNESS TRACKER: Now this is where it can get pricey. You can spend top dollar on a watch that has all the bells and whistles or you can get a simple FitBit. I have my eye on a specific Garmin watch. It currently resides on my Amazon Wish List. Try to figure out what kind of tracker would work best for your loved one and surprise them for Valentine's Day!
COMPRESSION SOCKS: This is a great gift idea for any runner. Compression socks are great for recovery after those long runs. I have a few and I swear by them. I even wear them to work since I am on my feet for most of my 12 hour shift. My favorite brand is ProCompression. They offer great products and at a reasonable price.

A GOOD RUNNING BOOK: Amazon has such a huge selection of running boks that will inspire and motivate any runner. May I suggest Meb For Mortals: How to Run, Think, and Eat like a Champion Marathoner? This is a great book with awesome advice to train like champion. If you just check out Amazon you will find a vast selection of running books that I am sure would be a hit.

Of course there are always the usual gifts that any runner would absolutely love:
  1. Gift Certificate for a massage
  2. Gift Certificate for a pedicure
  3. Pay for a race entry fee (this one is a great one!)
  4. Workout clothes (we can never have enough workout clothes!)
  5. Pay for a running coach for your runner
  6. Gift Certificate to their favorite running store
May I also suggest getting a bit creative and filling a basket with running essentials? In this basket you can put GU gels, Nuun, a nice smelling body spray ( I use this one by VS), running socks, a running magazine, and any of the above mentioned gifts.
Hope this list helps!

What Wellness Means To Me

About a week ago, I was asked what wellness meant to me. Well it really got me thinking of what would be the best way to answer this. Every person is different but for me wellness is composed of two parts: mental and physical. And to be honest I feel mental wellness is a bit harder to obtain. We live in a world where you are constantly judged for our looks, how we dress, how we talk, what we eat, and even what we believe. All this can totally play with the psyche making it difficult to feel good about ourselves. I am firm believer that in order to be the best version of you, it starts from inside.

So in order to start feeling better inside, you have to really be genuinely happy with how you feel about yourself.  For example, when you look at yourself in the mirror maybe instead of pointing out all the negative things, focus on your positive attributes. It starts with changing our perspective. We often seem to see things half empty instead of half full. We are all guilty of this when things get tough. This year I have been journaling three things I am grateful for every day and I can't tell you how much this has helped me.  So far my outlook on life has changed for the better. I am focusing on all the positive things in my life and really trying not to take things for granted. Even with everything that I have gone through most recently, I am still trying to be as happy as I can be.

Along with getting my mental health in order, I have been hard at trying to get the physical component down. I'll be the first one to point out that I don't have the best body. I have my flaws but I am working on them. I have cellulite and stretch marks like many other people. But I am happy with where I am. Most of my weight gained over the last few years have been because of the many different hormones while doing infertility treatments. I don't regret doing any of it and so I don't regret any of the extra weight I gained. My metabolism has been slowly getting better and I am starting to find my groove back.

I have been fortunate enough to receive some free samples from BeFit which will allow me to kick start this year. I can't wait to try them out. I have never tried a fat burner so that will be new. Best part is that I was actually running low on my protein powder and now I get to try a new brand. Along with their products they offer a 30 Day Fat Burner Program. Here is a little introduction video of the fitness program:

So this year I am really trying to work on me both physically and mentally. This year I am hoping I will finally have that overall wellness that I have been working for.  Stay tuned for a review of all the products and a giveaway to one lucky reader.

Friday Five: My Home Gym Equipment Wish List

I made the decision this year to not get a gym membership. Instead I have been working out from home and so far it has been great. It is super convenient to get a good workout from the comfort of my own home. I seriously have no reason to not workout. Don't get me wrong I do miss the gym, but mostly I miss certain gym equipment. I miss having a squat rack, a pool, a sauna, and other stuff. Little by little I am collecting equipment to make up for no longer having a gym membership. Here is my current wish list...hint, hint hubby!

I would love this!
I have been to a few gyms that have these and they are awesome.
You can get a full body workout without that added stress on your joints.
I'm keeping my eye on this!

Isn't she a beauty!
Like I said I miss my squat rack so this would definitely help with that feeling.
I can see myself building my booty with this and some added weights.
Oh the possibilities!

Never underestimate a simple workout bench.
It is super multifunctional.
And can target different areas of your body for a good workout.

I have dumbbells but kettle bells are a ton of fun.
I used to do a full body workout with these at my previous gym.

Full Length Mirror

Honestly any full length mirror will do.
This one just happens to be from Ikea.
Having a mirror allows me to check out my form.
It sounds a bit vane, but I miss looking at myself when lifting.

The Best Beach Towel Out There!

Let's be honest, I am pretty lucky to live in San Diego. This city is pretty awesome. Most people come here to visit and be tourist and I get to live here 365 days a year. To pin point one thing I love about this city would be incredibly hard. But since it is a coastal city, I will say that having access to beautiful beaches is pretty high up on the list.

There are so many great beaches to check out around here. So when I was asked to review the Aurorae towel, I was more than happy to. I am always in search of a good beach towel and this one sure didn't dissapoint. First of all this towel is huge and super soft. Being extra large means there is extra coverage...seriously there could potentially be room for two! This company prides itself on having a very durable and long lasting towel. I haven't had it that long but even after a few washes it still feels nice.

It's microfibers allow for maximum absorbency which is perfect when going for a swim in either the ocean or a pool. El Nino has been hitting the California coast recently so swimming in the ocean has not been ideal. Plus it is winter so my butt won't be getting in that water until it warms up a bit more. I've resulted in going to the local YMCA for some lap pool time. The other day I actually used it during my workout as my sweat rag. Yes the towel was a bit on the bigger side, but it did the trick. Or if you are in need of a blanket, this towel is large enough to keep you warm especially out on a picnic .

I should also point out that this company is known for having great customer service. I mean they offer a wide varitety of products (a lot of which are yoga products) and still have a 100% satisfaction guaranteed. Each product that they sell comes with a full 2 year guarantee. So where can you buy their products? You can purchase this towel and other products on their website and on Amazon.

I was given a free towel to review but all opinions are my own.

Running Without A Plan

This year I made no real goals. All I really wanted to do was change my way of thinking. I wanted to start being grateful each and every day for all the little things that I take for granted. So far my gratitude journal has kept me accountable for that. But since I didn't make any fitness goals, it's been a bit weird. I feel a bit off, like I am missing something.

Every year I run the Carlsbad Half Marathon at the beginning of the year.  It's a great race to start the year, but I missed it this year. It would have been 10 years if I had ran this race this past weekend. The main reason I didn't run was because I needed a break. I needed to regroup and to be honest I thought I would be pregnant around this time after our IVF cycle. I almost signed up for it at the last minute, but then I thought I should take this time to heal. Heal my body from the stress of running. And heal my mind from the stress of our failed IVF cycle.

Funny thing though, even though I am not training for anything in particular I am racking in the miles. Just last week I ran over 22 miles and my body felt great. My pace has dropped and I am really enjoying running right now. Yes, running has always been my stress reliever but I guess not having a real training plan has allowed me to just truly enjoy all my runs. It has actually gotten me a bit excited about signing up for my next big race. I know I will run the Rock n Roll San Diego race in June but I was thinking of possibly signing up for the Chicago Marathon. Yep! That's right...the girl who said she would never run another marathon is contemplating putting her name in the lottery for this iconic race.

Not really sure what the rest of the year will look like for me, but so far it is looking good. In April I am signed up to take my running coach certification. I have been wanting to do this for a few years, so I am super excited about this. This could lead to so many fun and great things for me within the running community. And if I get into the Chicago Marathon...let's just say my whole year will revolve around this.

Things I Am Loving Lately!

Happy Friday! Unfortunately today is my Monday. I will be working the next three days (or nights to be exact). Before I head out to work, I wanted to just share some of the things I am absolutely loving. It's been awhile since I've blogged about this, but it will give you a sneak peek into my personal life. Hope you have a great weekend!

OATMEAL: I go in phases with my love for oatmeal. I started to like them again this week. Next week, who knows! When we got back from out of town I had absolutely nothing to eat in the fridge. So I looked at my pantry and found my oatmeal. It was super fast and easy to make. Since then I have gone grocery shopping so now I eat it with some fruits. Delish!

GRATITUDE JOURNAL: I am still going strong on my gratitude journal! I love how it already has changed the way I see different things. I am trying to think happy in order to be happy. This year I am really hoping I stick to this.

SAN DIEGO: I am so blessed to live here and have such amazing running views. El Nino hit us pretty big this past week, so I was couped up inside for much of the week. Today I finally got out and hit the pavement by the bay. I can't express how much I love this city and so glad I was able to move back home.

MY HOME GYM: If you read my last post, then you know I am starting my own home gym. No gym membership for me! Since it was raining pretty hard over here, I was blessed to go to the comfort of my garage and still get a good workout in. My treadmill has been great and I am loving my new weight set. However, I am starting to see how out of shape I am. I did a leg workout a few days ago and I am still hobbling around. Right now I am really regretting having a split level home.

TEA TIME: I don't drink coffee, so tea is my go to for caffeine. Right now I am loving this specific tea. It tastes delicious and gives me a boost of energy (especially while working nights). I found this tea at Target but they also sell it at grocery stores. I haven't checked if it is on Amazon yet, but I wouldn't be surprised. Now a days you can pretty much get everything you need there.

KEVITA: I have been really trying to control some stomach issues I have been dealing with. I am trying to avoid dairy as much as possible since it causes a lot of bloating for me. I haven't stopped eating cheese but have really limited my intake. I saw this juice at the grocery store and bought it since it was on sale. I loved it! It is a probiotic drink and have read some really good reviews on it. Even Hungry Runner Girl talked about it recently.

RED LIPS: My sister-n-law gave me some free Sephora stuff. She is like this VIP member and gets a ton of freebies. I definitely scored with this red lipstick. I didn't think I could pull it off, but I got a lot of compliments. Even the hubby loved it so it was a win/win.

ORIGINS EYE CREAM: I received a sample of this GinZing eye cream and had to purchase it after my sample was done. I have been using it for a few months now and I love it. I purchased it from Sephora but I am pretty sure you can also find it at Ulta but don't quote me on that. The bottle is tiny but you really don't use that much. Just a little dab under the eye and voila!

Home Gym Here I Come!

Hello! So I am sure many of you guys are either super pumped to get fit this year or just tired of hearing/reading about it. I am a bit in the middle right now. I love the new year because it is the chance to start fresh but I am also tired of hearing about it. Don't get me wrong, I think it is wonderful if you are starting off the year all gun-ho, but stick to it...throughout the whole year. This time of the year is when everyone signs up for the gym, gets personal trainers, and tries to get on the health kick. Almost immediately you see the television commercials for weight watchers or gym memberships.

I remember I hated this time of the year at the gym. People come out of no where and then by mid February it would always be back to normal. This year though, I am not faced with that. This time around I am still not enrolled at any gym. When I moved down here, I wanted to wait and check out different places before making a decision. Well I kind of made a decision...NO GYM.

This decision was kind of made recently. It started when my brother gave me his treadmill. I was stoked when he offered this...for FREE! He recently had knee surgery so he said he had no need for it. Of course I took him up on this offer. And then we found a great deal on a weight set at Costco that we just couldn't pass up. I have been looking for this deal for a few years now and I had to jump on it when I saw it. So now I have a treadmill, weights, a bosu ball, stretchy bands, yoga mats, a bike trainer, and a jump rope.  Since my collection has just grown quite a bit, financially I thought it would be best to not invest in a gym membership. I am now just going to invest in my own home gym. So far it is pretty bland as far as decorations. I am in need of a mirror and need to hang up some stuff to make it more pleasant in my garage. I would love to finally hang my race medals somewhere.  Right now they have just been hanging out in a bag on the floor in the garage.

Now I know that I am going to miss certain aspects of the gym. I am going to miss having a sauna, a pool, a squat rack, and the variety of workout classes. I have decided though, that I am going to try to hit up some individual classes from local gyms to fill that void. Also if I want to hit the pool lanes, then luckily the YMCA is close by. If I am really feeling brave then I will put on my wet suit and hit the bay (probably not though).

Do you have a home gym?
