March Review + 5 Workout Songs To Add To Your Playlist!

Last day of March! This month was actually a ton of fun for me. I had some great runs, was a tourist in my own city, ate at some amazing restaurants, and had family and friends come and visit for Spring Break. Here is a little glimpse of my crazy month:

Total Miles: 51...I was honestly hoping to at least reach 60 but I took some time off at the end of the month to heal my right knee. I'm glad I did but it cost me a week and a half of training. I am trying to be really smart about my training this time around. I am truly trying to listen to my body and run pain free. Getting older sucks! I never experienced knee pain until after I turned 30!

Favorite Run: I would have to say all of my trail runs have been my favorite this month. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that running on the trails would bring me such joy but it truly has. I've been enjoying it so much that I actually bought my first pair of trail shoes. When I found a really good pair on clearance, I jumped at the opportunity. Bless my husband for supporting my crazy running.

Like I said earlier, we had friends and family come visit us so that meant I got to be a tour guide to my favorite city. Unfortunately when my sister in law and her family came to visit I was not able to go out with them much. I worked pretty much the whole time they were here. We did however grab dinner the night before they left. My bestie and her family came to visit that same week and with them I was able to check out and visit some of my favorite parts of San Diego. We went to the Zoo, the Safari Park, the beach (La Jolla), and ate at some really good restaurants.

Honestly it was the best spring break I've ever had! My heart was so full. I was sad when they left, but was happy that I was able to show them a great time. Living here in San Diego is pretty darn amazing!

So what's in store for April?

I am excited to continue my training and increasing my mileage. I am hoping to get around 60-70 miles for the month of April. I am also super excited to try out my new shoes on the trails. It's the little things that make me happy! One thing I am super thrilled about doing this month is getting my running coach certification. I have been wanting to get this certification for over two years now, but could never get in. I signed up for this a few months ago and it just dawned on me that I'll be taking my course next weekend! I am not sure if I will do anything with my certification but who knows...I'm just happy to learn more about running and making good training plans.

Also if you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know I love to listen to music when I run. Here are my top 5 songs for the month of March. Hope these help to motivate you and give you a great workout like they did for me! ENJOY!!

Half Mararthon Training: Week 4

I was really going to skip this weekly blog post since I did absolutely nothing for my training! That's right...NOTHING! I really wanted to give my knee a rest and see if that helped. Two weeks ago I started getting this pain on my right knee when running. I iced it, took some time off but still didn't see much improvement. So this past week I just decided to take the whole week off.

Even though I did not do any running or strength training, I did get my steps in. My family and my friends came to visit our wonderful city so I had to the opportunity to play tour guide. We went to the zoo, the safari park, the beach, and ate at some really great restaurants. Here are just a few of the pictures from this past week:

As far as my training goes, I am slowly going to get back to it this week. Honestly I started my training early just in case I got any setbacks. I'll have plenty of time to adjust my training schedule from this little bump in the road. My goals for this week is to continue rehabilitating my knee, break in my new trail running shoes, and hopefully get a 6 mile run in.  We shall see how it goes!

Half Marathon Training: Week 3

The crazy thing with training is that it never truly goes according to plan...well at least for me. Since my schedule is pretty hectic with work, I knew following a strict training plan was not going to be possible. I barely just completed the third week of my training and already hit a setback. Last week during my night shift, I noticed my knee was starting to ache. It felt tight and a bit swollen. I had plans on taking a rest day the next day so I thought that would do the trick. I elevated it, iced it, and thought I'd be fine to go run again the next day. I unfortunately woke up the second day with it being a bit more pain.

Last week was also a busy work week for me which meant I was limited on when to do my long run. I was only scheduled to run 6 miles but unfortunately with my knee pain and work schedule, I was not able to complete that. The longest run I did was 4 miles and my total miles for the week were only 16 treadmill miles. I am pretty fortunate to have a treadmill available to me 24 hours a day, but I prefer running outside by the beach or the trails.

HERE ARE MY WORKOUTS FROM LAST WEEK:

MONDAY: 3 treadmill miles (6.6-6.8 mph pace), Toned Abs and Arms, and Maximum Hit

TUESDAY: 2 treadmill miles (6.6-6.8 mph pace), Cardio Crush

WEDNESDAY: REST DAY

THURSDAY: REST DAY

FRIDAY: 4 treadmill miles, Cardio ExtremeTotal Body Shred

SATURDAY: 4 treadmill miles (6.6-7.0 mph pace), Lower Body Blast

SUNDAY: 3 treadmill miles (6.6-6.8 mph pace)

This coming week I am actually going to try to relax and heal my knee a bit more. I do have plans on making up for my long run but that is it! I don't go back to work until next Saturday but I'll be playing tour guide. My family is currently visiting and once they leave, my friend and her family are coming to visit. It feels like I am running a bed and breakfast but I love having company over.

I'm truly hoping that my knee just needs a little bit more rest. I am absolutely terrified of starting to have knee pain. Fingers crossed the pain goes away! Yesterday I signed up for the Chicago Marathon lottery so this knee pain is truly a wrench in my training.

Have a great week!

Half Marathon Training: Week 2

Hello Monday! I had a pretty great weekend doing yard work, finishing up some house projects, and spending time with friends. Most people hate Mondays but I don't really seem to mind them, mostly because I have a weird work schedule. I guess that is the perk of working at a hospital.

I also just finished up with the second week of my half marathon training. I am really taking it easy and so far I'm truly enjoying my training. This past week my only goal was to run a five mile run. It may not seem like a lot, but it was to me. I hadn't ran five miles in awhile so you can imagine how I was pleasantly surprised when my pace for the five miles was actually not bad. I'll be slowly increasing my miles from now on in hopes of not overtraining or getting injured.

HERE ARE MY WORKOUTS FOR THE PAST WEEK:

MONDAY: 4 miles on the treadmill (6.6-6.8 mph pace), Total Body Shred

TUESDAY: 2 miles on treadmill (6.6-7.5 mph pace), Cardio Burn

WEDNESDAY: Rest Day

THURSDAY: Lower Body Blast

FRIDAY: 4 miles on the trails, Total Body Shred

SATURDAY: 5 miles on Mission Bay, Legs and Butt Shaper

SUNDAY:  Rest Day

My favorite run was actually not my five mile run but my 4 mile trail run. When I first started trail running I was bad! I mean my pace was like 11:30 mph. I knew trail running was hard but I didn't realize how hard it was until I noticed how slow I was. I was super happy on Thursday when I realized after running four miles, my pace was 9:42! Quite a huge change from when I first started. I can only hope that my pace will keep improving.  Since trail running is a big part of my training this time around, I ordered some trail running shoes. They should be arriving in the next week or so. In the mean time I'll just continue using my Brooks Glycerin shoes. Oh yeah and I also bought some new running shoes since it had awhile.  I debated on trying new shoes, but in the end I didn't want to rock the boat. I just got the newest version of the Brooks Glycerin. I absolutely love these shoes and I've already broken them in.

Overall I managed to run a total of 15 miles this past week. This coming week I'll continue to increase my mileage. My goal is to run 6 miles and hit the trails again. When I run the trails I try to pick routes that have a few rolling hills just so I can kill two birds with one stone. During my treadmill runs I am going to try to incorporate more sprints. I still can't seem to run more than 4 miles on the treadmill. But watching Netflix has certainly helped.

Have a great week!

Random Thoughts + BeFit Giveaway Winner

I can't believe it is already Thursday! This week just flew by. I've been busy with work the past three nights and I am writing this as I am coming off of a night shift. Talk about tired!

I love my job but I am happy to be done and out of there for a few days. It's been a bit depressing at the hospital lately. So many people are coming in through the Emergency Department with the flu and unfortunately quite a few have passed. Some patients are immunocompromised and others are perfectly healthy with no underlying diseases. This flu is definitely not bias and is attacking so many people.  I know people have strong opinions about the flu shot, but if there is even the slightest chance of preventing death from the flu, then why not give it a try? This is not meant to be a PSA but just a thought. If I didn't have to get the flu shot for work, I am not sure that I would take it. Honestly I am only talking about it because it REALLY has been depressing seeing people die from this.

On another topic...Wednesday was International Women's Day. I just wanted to share the two most important women in my life...my mother and my grandmother. Without their love and support, I would not be where I am today. My abuelita suffers from Alzheimers but she is one of the strongest women out there. She is the back bone of our entire family. My mother and I have had our ups and downs (like most mother/daughter relationships of course), but in the end I know that I can always count on her. When I was little she strongly encouraged me to get an education and to never depend on a man. She taught me to be an independent woman and for that I will forever be thankful.

I have kind of slacked off in my gratitude journal. To be honest it was getting hard to be grateful with three things every single day. I was struggling to find knew things every day. I since then have just been trying acknowledge all the good things that happen to me everyday. I am not journaling it, but I am taking five minutes out of my day to reflect on the positive things in my life.  With so many negative things that have happened to me in the past year I am choosing to be happy. I choose joy every single day.

Lastly, I wanted to thank all of you who participated in my BeFit Giveaway. I have truly been enjoying their products and was happy to share the love with one lucky person. The winner for the BeFit giveaway is:

Adam Brugman
*he was contacted this morning*

Thank you to all who participated!

1st Week of Half Marathon Training

The beginning of March meant it was training time! My next race coming up is the SD Rock n Roll Half Marathon. I absolutely love this race for many reasons. For one...I am able to get a free race entry. With race prices increasing, having a free race entry is quite amazing. The second reason I love this race is because it happens to be in my home town. It is incredible how much support you get from people all around. The race happens to be on June 5th so that gives me a few months to truly train for this one. Since it's been awhile since my last race, I am shooting for breaking 2 hours on this one.

With my work schedule being all over the place, I know it will be a bit difficult to follow a training plan. There are a ton of new training plans I was hoping to try but I am just going to incorporate a little of each one. My training this time around will consist of more cross training and running on the trails. Running on trails is new to me but I am truly enjoying it. I am not really sure why I never ran on them before but since moving to San Diego I have been going at least once a week.

Also this time around I am truly going to enjoy my easy runs. I am going to have to remind myself that they are meant to be recovery runs and not worry about time. Since I have a history of plantar fasciitis, I am going to have to really listen to my feet and stretch them out after EVERY single run. This is something that will be very crucial to my training. In the past, my heel pain has deterred me from running. I think I have a good handle on it now but I'll be honest and get a bit lazy after some runs.

WORKOUTS AT A GLANCE:

MONDAY: 2 treadmill miles with 6.6-6.8 mph pace,  Dynamic Strength Workout

TUESDAY: 3 treadmill miles with 6.6-7.0 mph pace, Cardio Extreme Workout

WEDNESDAY: 3 treadmill miles with 6.6-6.8 mph pace, Legs and Butt Shaper

THURSDAY: 4 miles on Mission Bay, Metabolic Booster

FRIDAY: 4 miles by San Diego River/Mission Bay

SATURDAY: The Super Run 5K (in memory of our dear friend AJ Jabonero)

SUNDAY: Rest Day (took the dogs to the dog park)

So that was my week in a nutshell. I'll be posting my workouts/training weekly just to keep myself accountable and if it motivates you along the way then it serves as a double purpose. I am still very much hooked on the BeFit workouts, so I am doing the 30 day shred all over again. If you want more info on BeFit products then check out my review and sign up for an awesome giveaway!

Have a great week!

BeFit Products Giveaway!!

Boy do I have a great giveaway for you guys! Back in January I was lucky enough to be asked to try the BeFit products. The products consisted of a pre-workout, a protein powder, and a fat burner. Along with the products, I also tried their 30 Day Shred Workouts from YouTube. Their campaign slogan is quite simple #BeFitAllYear. One lucky reader will win all three products!

Everyone always has great intentions during the New Year to get fit, but it's important to keep that motivation going throughout the entire year. Living that healthy lifestyle requires hard work and dedication. With the right products you can definitely be motivated to keep going forward. I can honestly say that I truly loved using the BeFit products and workouts.

So here is a little recap on everything that I tried this past month:

THE PRE-WORKOUT:

I have tried my share of pre-workouts over the past few years. Some have left me super queazy, others made me feel like my heart was going to explode. I luckily did not experience any of these things with this pre-workout. Another side effect I luckily did not experience was the "crash" feeling after the pre-workout wore off. The energy it gave me before my workouts was amazing. I was given the fruit punch flavor and I really enjoyed the taste. I will say this though...it may be a bit TMI but I just want to be honest. My stomach digested it pretty quickly if you know what I mean! I had to make sure I was close to a bathroom for the first few days.

THE PROTEIN POWDER:

I was actually running low on my protein powder, so the timing was perfect. They gave me vanilla flavor and it was surprisingly good. Let me rephrase...I hate anything that has vanilla so I was pleasantly surprised I truly liked this protein powder. My go-to smoothie consisted of half a banana, a spoonful of almond butter, a scoop of protein powder, and some water. I drank a protein shake after my workouts and sometimes as a meal replacement. It kept me full for about four hours.

THE FAT BURNER:

I'll be honest and say that I had never tried a fat burner before this. It works without over stimulating the central nervous system so you don't experience those jittery feelings that I read some other fat burners do. This fat burner helps metabolize and burn fat faster  my managing your cravings and curbing your appetite. I took two pills 10 minutes before my biggest meal as the instructions specifically said. Some days I would forget to take them and I noticed the difference. Those food cravings would come out of no where!

** for more information on their products and recipes, check out their website **

THE 30 DAY FAT BURNER WORKOUTS:

The calendar is super easy to follow and convenient. All the workouts can be found online on YouTube and the best part is that they are only 10 minutes long! You literally just need a small dumbbell set (3-10 lbs) and a small area to workout in. I've been using my living room, but these exercises can be done anywhere as long as you have Internet access. Towards the end of the month, the workouts start to double up but you work up to it.

Along with these workouts, I was still running. I did notice my pace improved whenever I took my pre-workout too.

MY RESULTS:

The past three years I have slowly kept gaining weight (not by choice). I had been on and off taking hormones for my infertility and regardless of how much I worked out, the weight kept creeping up. In November I was doing my IVF treatments and that is when I was probably at my heaviest since college. The scale was my worst enemy and I would get so discouraged. My face was puffy, my arms were chubby, and I had acquired more cellulite. All my clothes fit me tight and I just felt so swollen! This program came to me at such the right time! In only a little over a month of trying it, I lost four pounds and total of 6 inches all over my body. I still have quite a bit to go to get to my baseline, but I am happy with the results so far.

HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO WIN:

Click the link below to enter to win. I will choose a random winner by next Thursday! If you have problems with the link just write a comment below telling me your favorite protein powder flavor.  For some bonus entries follow me on Instagram! Unfortunately this giveaway is only for US residents. Good luck!! This is a great giveaway worth over $120!!
