I am constantly trying to find ways to stay healthy. Wether is it changing my workouts, changing my eating habits, or simply making sure I get more sleep, I am always in search for ways to be the better version of myself. If I look back in all my years of life (we won't mention how many years) I can honestly say my college years were when I was the most unhealthy. I partied hard, consumed lots of greasy food, and had horrible sleeping patterns. I gained 30 pounds and honestly felt tired all the time. Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of fun but I was living a very unhealthy lifestyle that eventually caught up to me. It wasn't until after I graduated that I really started to take note of how my actions were affecting how I felt.
Since then I have realized that being healthy is a component of both mind and body. This summer I have taken on the task of training for the Chicago Marathon which is a lot to take on when you work full time and have many other commitments. It's been overwhelming at times, but rewarding to see all the positive changes that my body has taken. So what's different this time around? I'm listening to my body, enjoying my workouts, watching what foods I consume, and finding better ways to destress.
Right now there is only one aspect of my life I need to correct and that is my sleeping pattern. Since I work nights, I am currently having trouble sleeping during the day. Working the graveyard shift forces the body to operate counter to its circadian rhythm, the internal clock that tells us when we should be sleeping and when we should wake. Few people adapt easily or completely to such schedules. I guess I am one of the unlucky ones then. This has now become a top priority to fix though.
It's never too late or the wrong time to change your lifestyle for the better. It honestly starts with the commitment to make a change. Taking simple steps towards your health is all it takes to start seeing results. I am grateful I made the change and I am constantly trying to improve my health, striving for the best version of myself. One of the easiest ways to start is to just be active! Get outside and go for a hike, a run, a bike ride...do something to get the endorphins going!
